BAGNI DI PETRIOLO

A natural spa rich in sulphurous waters

Not far from Podere il Moro are the Bagni di Petriolo, famous for their sulphurous waters. The waters of Petriolo spring at a temperature of 43°C from a source located on the bank of the Farma stream, a tributary of the Merse, which in turn feeds into the Ombrone. The Bagni di Petriolo were frequented by many notable figures. The strong smell of sulphur they emit is due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide in significant quantities. This gas is responsible for many of the therapeutic effects on the respiratory system. The waters of Petriolo have been described as rich in salts, sulphydric, and hyperthermal.

The Petriolo thermal baths are situated along state road no. 223, which connects Siena with Grosseto, in an area surrounded by a woodland of oaks, holm oaks, and strawberry trees.
